Information

This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Sampson Williams (1762-1841), and attempt to connect them to their families. It is currently under construction, and information and sources are in the process of being transferred from the Sampson Williams page.

Enslaved people recorded with names:

The following table aligns slave tallies from the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses to allow for potential tracking of deaths/sales/escapes and new births or purchases, with the acknowledgment that we can never know if the numbers represent the same person or a departure of one person and replacement with someone in the same age and gender category. Additionally, the assessment of slave ages was done with various levels of care by various census-takers, and numeracy of enslaved people varied. In total, these records suggest at least 65 individual people were held by Williams (at points where the census would have captured them at least once).

Research Notes

There is a known court case between heirs regarding Cynthia Nickens (1820-bef.1853), which will need examined for more potential names/IDs (her children are mentioned), as well as an anecdote regarding a man named Cumbo, which should have a source tracked down.
